A unique opportunity to hear about the discoveries of a Roman-age cemetery, at the Newington Hotel site, by the very archaeologists who undertook the dig last year is on offer on 9th May at York’s ‘DIG’ attraction.
York’s Newington Hotel’s excavation has proven so popular that York Archaeological Trust, the organisation responsible for the dig last year have organised a special talk in May to showcase their findings and what the site tells us about life and death in Roman York.
“Despite the depredations of medieval ploughing and later building development, a number of graves have survived with a superb level of preservation with some including grave goods in the form of pots, dishes, flagons and beakers, and also traces of the coffins in which the dead were laid to rest.”
Said Ben Savine, field archaeologist for York Archaeological Trust and project manager for the Newington Hotel excavation.
It is this first-hand insight that people will get when they attend the special talk that Ben will be delivering at York’s ‘DIG – An Archaeological Adventure’ this May as part of a programme of events linked to the latest ‘YourDIG’ community exhibition, which focuses in the impact of the Romans on the city.
“YourDIG tells the stories of specific communities and how they access their shared heritage through archaeology. In our latest exhibition we are focusing on Roman York and how archaeological practices of the Trust have enabled people to engage with this fascinating period of history. This talk is another great way for people to learn more about Roman York through the archaeology as well as the chance to meet an actual Archaeologist involved in the excavation.”
Commented Jen Jackson, Community Engagement Manager for York Archaeological Trust and its attractions and events arm, The JORVIK Group.
