Green glazed cup - pottery from the empire (1) (1)

2000 years ago, a legion of the mighty Roman army built a fortress between the River Ouse and River Foss, and Eboracum was born. Excavations by York Archaeological Trust have revealed tantalising glimpses of the Roman city – a thriving settlement on the frontier of a great empire.

Life and Death in Eboracum explores the fascinating evidence for the city’s trades, cultures and traditions, uncovered over four decades of excavations. As the Trust plans a major new dig as part of the proposed Roman Quarter development, discover what we know so far about a city that began as wooden barracks, but became a centre of commerce, wealth and power.

The Life and Death in Eboracum exhibition is at DIG, St Saviourgate, York, YO1 8NN. The exhibition is included with a standard ticket to DIG, or an exhibition-only ticket can be purchased for £2.50 adult/£1.50 concessions & children/£7.25 family of four/£8 family of five.
