Trent & Peak Archaeology

Trent & Peak Archaeology are currently investigating at Wingerworth, to the south of Chesterfield.

The site being excavated at Wingerworth has revealed a high concentration of Romano- British archaeology. The excavations are uncovering a buried Roman landscape dating to the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. You will see evidence of 1700 year old property boundaries, pens or working areas as well as evidence of kilns/ovens used by the Romano- British inhabitants.”

On the 9th December we are holding an open day on the site from 9.30am, with the chance to see displays of the finds, take a tour of the site and even have the opportunity to excavate a part of it!

We are running excavation sessions for those who want to get dirty! The sessions, running for a hour from will involve a short tour of the site followed be a 40 minute dig focussed on the large 8m wide Roman ditch. Sturdy footwear and waterproofs are a must and participation can be refused if footwear is deemed to be inappropriate. Digging equipment will be provided. Children must be over 10 year olds and 10-16 year olds to be accompanied by an adult.

Dig slots: 9.30am, 11am, 1pm, 2.30pm

There is no address for the site as it is still under construction  – the nearest postcode is the opposite side of the road: S42 6NP
